Julie and Julia

Julie and Julia (2009) starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams.
Meryl Streep is amazing.  She is the Al Pacino or Johnny Depp of female actors.  She transforms herself into whatever character she is playing and makes me forget that she's anyone but the person she's playing.  Amy Adams is mousy.  The end.  She's got that thing that makes her watchable but I found myself getting fed up her.  I wanted to watch Streep and I couldn't give a shit about her or her character.  Great, Julie Powell is a loser who decides to blog, I don't care which is Adams' fault since as an actor she is supposed to make me care.  I cared because what she was doing with the food was interesting but Powell could have been played by anyone.  I looked at the food and cared about the food much more than I did about Powell or her marriage which went from love to fight to almost breakup to reconcilliation without covering the needed ground.  Her marriage could have been left at the curb but the writers were trying to run it parallel to Streep's Child and her marriage.  Child's marriage was more interesting to watch but only because it had to do with Julia Child and Meryl Streep.  It wasn't necessarily written better but because of the romantic background of Paris and Child, it was more interesting.
This is a good movie but at 2 hours, it was too long.  Adams was in the movie to often.  It should have been pure Streep as Julia Child but I doubt this picture would have worked as a straight bio piece so the Powell charecter was sadly needed.  If you like mousey women, then you'll love Adams but if you don't then focus on the food whenever she's there---Julia Child will be around shortly.
